Ceilings
The most common ceiling types are open and closed rafters. Open rafters showcase the architecture of the roof while closing the rafters allows space for recessed lighting to be installed.
Open Rafter – Typically roof joists are stained and electrical wires for ceiling fans or lights are hidden in conduit.
Closed Rafter – Installing vinyl soffits or T1-11 panels to enclose the rafters can be done in several ways. Schedule an appointment with us to discuss the various looks.
Trim Options
There are two general trim options, wood & PVC. Building and trimming with lumber materials is a budget friendly way to build a porch. This is often the preferred method when building on a wood deck. Using white PVC trim to cover support posts, roof line, and rail is also very common and requires less maintenance and more durability over time but can increase the project cost significantly.
At your design consultation we will discuss other options like arched frieze boards, decorative knee walls, siding to match the house so that you have all of the information that you need to make an educated decision.

We hired HD Exteriors to build a screened porch on our small brick rambler. We met with Corey from the design team initially. Out of all the quotes we received, we appreciated Corey's clear vision and design option. Mike was our foreman. He was responsive to our questions and concerns. The office staff and other crew members - electrician, roofers, etc. - were also good, professional, and on time. But the best out of all were our two assigned workers - Jose & Oscar - who basically removed and built the porch from the ground up. They came in the cold, wind, and rain and worked tirelessly on the job. We were amazed at how efficient they were. The porch itself is more beautiful than we expected. Just like other reviewers, we will definitely be writing another review or updating this one after the work on the patio starts and is completed, which is over a month from now. In the meantime, it is important to give credit to and commend HD personnel that are not part of the building crew. Dustin, a Design Consultant, came to our house for the first time on a Saturday afternoon and spent 3 hours with us. He was on time, knowledgeable, respectful, and extremely patient; he answered all our questions and concerns and gave us the impression that he is not just out to make a deal for his employer, but actually cares about the company. My husband and I have had many projects done with contractors but we have never agreed to any proposal "on the spot" and without "sleeping on it". Dustin's attitude, clear, and honest opinion, as well as his dedication, made this a first for us! My family and I can’t recommend HD Exteriors enough.Our old deck was builder grade, falling apart, and not the safest. We contacted HD Exteriors July 2022 and they sent their sales representative, Corey Robertson, out a few days later. Corey was excellent – patient, a wealth of knowledge, and so personable. He took measurements, listened to what we wanted, then spent about two hours discussing our options. We decided to have our old deck removed, a new composite deck built, and under the deck a stone paver patio with a retaining wall built. We knew that this was not going to be a cheap or easy job, but it was one we had been saving up for and knew that it needed to be done and done correctly. Corey helped us make adjustments according to our budget, our expectations, and even took into account supply chain issues.When finished, we put down a deposit, told our project was understandably about 120 days out, and that the office would be in touch with us to handle HOA approval and building Permits. We were contacted the very next day by the President of HD Exteriors thanking us for our business, and a few days after by the HOA Team with a 40-page packet of all required information to submit to our HOA for approval of our deck build. Many contractors do not do this step, usually it’s up to the home owner and that’s not the case with HD Exteriors. Our HOA approved our application right away and we were waiting until November 2022 to start our project, but instead we were pleasantly surprised.Middle of August 2022 we were contacted by HD Exteriors that our permits were filed and approved, and all of our materials were available so they were ready to start our project by the last week of August. This was such great news, and from there it was a whirlwind of activity. While at times it seemed a little overwhelming, we had nothing but open communication with management. Everything from when our supplies were going to be delivered to walk thru times. We also had all the contact information for our project managers and could reach out to them with any questions. HD Exteriors helped us every step of the way, and our final product was beyond our expectations.Great communication, delivered early and with very impressive results. Can’t recommend enough. 10 out of 10!

I met with HD Exteriors to obtain a quote to replace my wooden deck. The deck is 21' x 24' - so, it's rather large and I knew that it would be a costly project. HD Exteriors handles EVERYTHING! HOA submission and approval, permits, inspections, materials delivery...but, what's even better, I received texts and emails every step of they way. I did not need to call them to ask the status of anything. They scheduled the date/time to start the project and the workers were there 30 minutes early! HD rebuilt an existing deck while simultaneously expanding the original footprint and adding a 3 seasons room (screened porch). They were encumbered by having to work with another contractor to modify a fireplace chase to accommodate a new fireplace being installed concurrent to their job. The other contractor was difficult and disorganized but HD not only performed their portion of the job well, but they also helped mitigate poor work done by the fireplace contractor. Luckily for us, the competitive price did not mean a lower quality, as we have been very satisfied with the top notch craftsmanship they provided. Starting from the design process, Corey did a great job of listening to what we wanted and envisioning a design we were happy with. Even after the contract was finalized, they were great when it came to requests and any modifications we wanted. I think we went through at least 3 major design changes with them and they were accommodating each time. Communication with the front office was easy as they had an automated system to let you know where you are in the process and helped you to schedule the next steps. The workers were very professional and courteous also, cleaning up the site after every night. When we pointed out issues are things we did not like, the whole team was quick to respond and make the fixes/updates. Working with HD Exteriors was a breeze, from the first meeting with our designer, Dustin Spencer, we knew we wanted to work with the company. After doing some follow up with neighbors, our decision to go with HD was cemented. We considered other companies who built a similar product to what we wanted, but the experience just wasn't there.HD handled everything from the HOA application (neighbor signatures were gathered by us, the homeowner), county application, inspection etc. Status emails were sent regarding the delivery of materials and when work would start. The timeframe in which these emails are sent could be improved or adjusted if the schedule changes. The payment system showed the payment schedule at the allotted time frames during the project (start, % complete, complete). I do wish there were email reminders for this portion as the project progressed but nonetheless, payment was made.Once the project was completed, the crew cleaned up and removed signs and trash.Getting a custom colored railing to complement the color of our home was key and HD was able to deliver. The quality of the work really does speaks for itself.I'm excited to decorate and get ready to enjoy the outdoor space.

I don’t normally go out and put reviews unless I’m moved by an experience, service, quality, etc. In this case I just had to get it out there. HD Exteriors has been the best experience I have had with any patio/porch/deck company ever! Over the course of 3 homes, this is the fifth time doing a major exterior project. Each time I tried a different route of getting the project completed. Working with HD Exteriors has been the most rewarding and satisfying. They get an A++ for service, quality, cost, and just plain being human! I trust them whole-heartedly to do any future work on my house. In fact, I have already made plans for additional projects in my back yard and will be using them for all of them. My father is a tough critic and hard to impress. He is an excellent gauge that I use when making decisions. In this case, even he was extremely happy FROM THE BEGINNING with the work and experience! I just can’t say enough great things about the company, the workers, and especially the main team I worked with for this effort: Graham Sr., Graham Jr., Tom, Edwin, Diane, Beth, and Kim. If you want a WIN-WIN situation, then I suggest you go with HD Exteriors!It began with me having ideas of what I wanted added to the back of my house. I had contacted many companies to get ideas, suggestions, and estimates. Out of all the companies that came out, HD Exteriors had the best of all worlds! Graham Jr., the owner’s son, came over to look at the space, make suggestions, and give an estimate. Working with him was the most pleasant experience in customer service I have ever had. That was the beginning of me realizing HD Exteriors is what I wanted out of partnering with a business to complete a project. For this work, I went with a patio, deck and covered and screened porch. Graham Sr., the owner, was the next step in making the design a reality and crunching the final numbers. In fact, if it wasn’t for him, my project would have been average in terms of detail and looks. But he made a stellar design, incorporated my wants, and still was able to bring the price point down to something that worked for me and him. In fact, he was the lowest quote I had received! His work also included a warranty that was longer than the others and he was going to make sure we are happy at the end of the project. When the work began, the crews that came out for the work also were very pleasant and easy to work with. Tom, the project manager, and Edwin, the supervisor, were great to talk to and helped in making things happen. They were on site as needed. The crews were professional and knew what they were doing. When the work was completed, I couldn’t believe what I had on the back of my house! The completed patio, deck and porch turned out to be the best design in my neighborhood! My family could wait to start using the new space. Everyone was so happy. Neighbors were stopping through just tell me how wonderful the completed project looks and that they want something like that. I’m still in awe on how it turned out. It was natural and classy at the same time. It was PERFECT!I worked with Diane, Beth, and Kim throughout the whole process. They are in the HD Exteriors office and assist with the logistics, scheduling, payment, and closing out the project. It was an awesome operation as a whole. As said before, it’s a WIN-WIN! My family couldn’t be happier, and we look forward to future rewarding experiences and projects with HD Exteriors!

I needed to replace the original deck on our 26 year house. The original was a standard townhome 12x10 "balcony" . We have an end unit so space was a bit more than usual so we wanted something to extend the entire back of the house with stairs going down the side towards the front gate. Dealing with HD was a pleasant & professional experience beginning with the initial consultation conducted by Cory, the office manager Beth, office staff Kim, Project Managers Kevin & Tom, and even the owner Graham Perry himself. They processed the permit, HOA, and miss utility with no issues. The communicated with me with delays of the lumber because of supply chains was affected by covid-19. When the lumber was delivered the HD crew did the job in a efficient and professional manner. They even covered the cost of the verizon fiber line when it was cut by accident during the install. I would defiantly go with them again if there is any future deck projects in my future.

Our small 8x10 deck replacement turned into a multi month challenging project when the condo association, Arlington County, and Covid-19 all presented us with unforeseen obstacles. Throughout the process Graham Perry and the HD team worked tirelessly with us to address the various concerns. When it became apparent that the county was making a rebuild impossible, Graham worked with us to change the nature of the work to comply with the county and condo board restrictions. Although this meant less money for HD, Graham arranged to get the deck built quickly and beautifully. Even the condo board members said it was an excellent job that will last for years. It is a pleasure to work with a group of people with such professional integrity and commitment to the customer. Difficult situations are when you really learn about people. Tom and his crew did a wonderful job on the deck. It looks great. I had an electrical problem that happened during the job due to the use of the power tools. We consider ourselves lucky to have found HD Exteriors to build our deck addition and the lattice work cover for the underside of our existing screened porch. Prior to this, we have called and interviewed a few other contractors who did not satisfy our requirements and price point. The HD crew of Jose and Rodolfo did a great job in spite of challenges that were not of their own making, like weather delays. Their boss Graham was very forthcoming in explaining to us when they encountered minor problems, and patiently listened when we had questions. We really felt that we could trust them to finish the work according to the contract, which they did. The company office staff was very professional and promptly responded to our queries. We did a large project with HD Exteriors for replace and rebuild a deck with rain escape system and stairs; remove and replace patio with high end stone pavers; remove and replace fence. Graham and the crew were first rate! Project was well organized and timely. Beth managed the office and kept us informed. Overall we spent about $36K, but the price was better than those we competed it with and the quality was outstanding. Crew was very nice and Graham took the time to ensure we were happy with every detail. Payment schedule was straight forward and ensured they had skin in the game throughout the project. Would not hesitate to use them again. Their work is second to none!

HD Exteriors built our deck and put in a sliding glass door for access where there was previously a window. Graham and his team made the process easy from the beginning. They handled getting HOA approval, permits and kept us informed during the whole process. The deck and door look beautiful and the county inspector commented on the high quality of work. A couple of boards needed to be replaced, but they took care of that quickly. I just want to say that it was a true pleasure and pain free experience having HD Exteriors build our dream deck. Graham sat with us on day one and helped us draw up a blue print of what we wanted our deck to look like. He listened to our requests and gave us his personal opinion on aspects. His experience in building decks really made the final results perfect! His team did all the leg work for us, pulling permits and having inspectors come out to inspect the work. HD Exteriors - A+You won’t believe this - HD Exteriors did the project as if the work was being done on their own house. Everything they said they would do was done in a timely and competent manner. They cleaned and took the trash away every day. The communication between all of us was exceptional – they willingly listened to us and went out of their way to make sure that our questions were fully answered.During our 40+ years in NoVA this was the best experience we have ever had with the contractors that we have worked with. Our deck/porch project went flawlessly and was done by courteous, intelligent and experienced professionals. On days when they knew they would be late (only a couple of times) they always told/called us. We never wondered where they were – they did not let the project linger. They worked continuously except for lunch – no breaks or wasted time. They measured twice and cut once. They did not rush the project just to get it done. What else can I say? From our first meeting and subsequent contract to the finished project and final walk through, HD Exteriors was outstanding every step of the way. I would use them again without hesitation.

HD Exteriors got my roof completely covered by Insurance at no cost to me except for my deductible. They basically did all the work for me. While they could work on their responsive time and coordination between different departments, overall their work was great and eventually I got everything I wanted!

Overall they did a great job and we're really pleased with our new deck and fence. Their customer service was excellent. It's above and beyond what we had before. When we called for a quote they were prompt in scheduling and Graham came out as scheduled to give us a quote. They worked within our budget and gave us options we hadn't considered, like using black aluminum rails instead of wood, which looks really nice and will last a long time. The deck was completed quickly and the guys who built it did a great job. Two different guys completed our fence and lattice work under the deck, and I feel they rushed the job. There were few things I pointed out and they quickly addressed those issues, but now that it's been completed for a few weeks there are little things I'm noticing about the quality of the fence construction that I'm not thrilled about. I'm also picky, it may not be things that stand out to others. Overall we're happy, just some details that I feel could be better. I would recommend them to others.
